🌈 caterpillars day 7

Lots of changes today and some maths for you

There are 2 chrysalids hanging , and 2 have fallen off and 1 is still a caterpillar. How many are there altogether?

I might draw that out. It’s a bit of a sum.

Can you show it on your fingers 2 and 2 and 1

What about if there were

Can you make a sum for 6 caterpillars or ten caterpillars. You could make up how many are hanging and how many are still caterpillars.

🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛. 🐛 remember that the total will always be ten

I was a little bit worried about the caterpillars that have fallen off but the people at insect lore said that it would be ok. I need to put them on some kitchen roll into the butterfly garden and they should be fine. I think I will do that tomorrow!

Eventually the last caterpillar shed its exoskeleton and there are now 5 chrysalids. Here’s my caterpillar diary for today

🌈 Caterpillars day 6

Well I’m really glad that Carlos managed to have a look at the caterpillars yesterday because today the caterpillars are quite fragile.

They are climbing up to the top of the pot and starting to hang down. Now we have to be careful with them. I’m not going to be able to move the pot as I don’t want to disturb them.

Can you see the caterpillar that’s hanging. He will be the first to change. He’s already hanging in a j shape. Next he will shed his exoskeleton. Soon all the caterpillars will be changing into chrysalides.

Now three of the caterpillars have crawled up to the top of the pot, and they’ve attached themselves to the filter paper. What do you think they would normally hang from? I think they’d hang from leaves. I wonder if there’s any caterpillars hanging from our trees in the nursery garden.

Oh no. I’ve just noticed that the first caterpillar has turned into a chrysalid but he’s fallen down. I wonder what I can do.

I’m going to do my caterpillar diary and have a think about rescuing the poor chrysalis

I hope you’ve managed to draw the caterpillars today. They’ve grown and changed so much already. They are almost ready for the next stage in their development.

🌈 caterpillars day 5

Look who has found the caterpillars!! It’s Carlos. He’s having a good look. Be gentle Carlos!

When I asked Carlos what he thought the caterpillars were he wasn’t sure what they were, but he managed to describe them to me. How would you describe the caterpillars? Think about what they look like, what colour are they, are they long or short? How do they move?

Maybe Carlos would like to draw a picture of the caterpillars.

Here’s a close up photograph in case you’d like to draw them too.

Don’t forget to draw your caterpillars diary….

The caterpillars seem to like crawling to the top of the pot. I wonder what they’re doing up there. I wonder if they’re getting ready to spin their chrysalis.

I hope we get to see that happen but just in case we miss it here’s a link to a film of a caterpillar changing into a chrysalis
