What We Offer

At Edmund Waller, we offer a topic-based curriculum where children learn through play.  Learning and activities are based around the children’s personal interest along with our current topic.  We ensure there is a balance between planned activities and continuous provision where children are able to return to interests and activities and develop new skills over time.

We aim for children to become independent learners who are confident in exploring their environment and who develop a positive attitude to education.  We support children to gain the skills and become confident in themselves, to manage challenges and develop resilience.

Children are given time to reflect and learn in a safe and welcoming environment and we share significant learning with parents using our learning journal app, Tapestry.

Nursery

We offer your child either a morning, afternoon or full-time place and this will be agreed before your child starts.

The morning session starts at 8:45 AM and children self-register before embarking on self-selected play activities.  The afternoon sessions starts at 12.30 with children self registering.  Full time is from 8.45 to 3.30.

We finish the morning and afternoon sessions by coming together for a group time, where we sing songs, play games, and listen to a story.

Children are collected at 11:40 in the morning and at 3.25 in the afternoon. We do appreciate your efforts in ensuring that children are brought and collected on time.

Children have independent access to healthy snacks and milk throughout the session. We ask parents to provide their child with a bottle of water.

Full time children bring a packed lunch and eat it in the nursery.

Curriculum

We follow the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2021) that sets out all Early Years providers with the learning and development requirements for children.  We use the Development Matters curriculum.  The curriculum is a general term for everything we want the children to experience, learn and be able to do.  It is also the way we foster and encourage children to develop their potential.  With young children learning is holistic and language is at the heart of everything we do.

There are seven areas of learning, divided into prime areas and specific areas.

Prime areas are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships, and thriving.

These are the Prime areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical Development and Communication and Language

The specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
